We must take this opportunity to make our voices heard for a strong Farm Bill for a stronger NYC.
What is the Farm Bill?
The Farm Bill, legislation that is passed by the United States Congress every five years, legislates rules that establish funding for essential anti-hunger programs - including The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). Learn more about our Farm Bill policy priorities here.
How Does the Farm Bill Impact New York City?
Over 1.8 million New York City residents participate in SNAP, making up 60 percent of all New York State residents participating in this program.
TEFAP accounts for the single largest public funding source for food assistance in New York City. About half of Food Bank For New York City’s distribution: over 39 million pounds annually) is purchased through TEFAP.
Every month, over 35,000 New York State older adults utilize CSFP to meet their nutrition needs. Food Bank For NYC distributes over 2 million pounds of food through CSFP.
